CHEEKO'S STORY

It was a bright crisp christmas morning when I became owned by my first horse. I was nine and he was three. Cheeko and I had been aquinted for a few years through riding lessons but never in my wildst dreams did i imagine i would look outside and see him waiting for me out in the snow quietly.

Our first ride at his new home was abit shaky, he wanted to go home. My father's first ride was even worse and we first found out then that he had been abused by men once upon a time. Dad ended up in a snow bank, I had a run away horse and my grandparents were killing themselves laughing at my father who looked like he was carved out of icing sugar.

After those first few days cheeko settled down fine and became the 'COW BOSS' and babysitter of calves in our little herd.

Cheeko and i became unseperatable over the next few years, both as a riding partner and a friend to confide my deepest secrets to. Our first big shock was when we sold the farm and cheeko and his pal Colonal Santana (saddlebred) were borded at my best freinds house.

Our next big shock as a pair turned out to be when we dicovered that Cheeko had navicular disease in his front two legs. Unfortunatly for a nine year old gelding, cheeko's legs were so bad that he was instantly put on a painkiller program and retired to basically a pet.

Our days became those of joyful petting, brushing and going to sit with him queitly while he napped. Occationally I would crawl around on him  and he would be my trick pony and stand up with me on him and i would sit on him for abit while he wandered.

It was a sad day in November 2006 when i gave the ok for cheeko to be put down. He could no longer live with out pain, but to kill a friend was the hardest thing i have had to do so far in this life time. For those short  years that we were together I found the best friend one can find, and in honour of him Paintabians will be introduced into our breeding program in the future.
